This report describes a project designed to identify job content common to all law enforcement officers in Florida in order to provide a basis for developing selection, training, and other personnel management procedures.
Abstract
Highly specific job data were collected from more than 6,000 officers and then analyzed to identify those areas of greatest similarity for all officers, as well as those areas of greatest difference. These areas of similarity and difference were spread across job tasks, forms and reports, equipment usage, and other special requirements. Nine personality variables were tested and compared to police performance. The data base resulting from the project can be used to begin development of statewide selection tests, to define the data needs for promotion standards, and to analyze training programs in detail to ensure that they are consistent with job requirements. Recommended future uses of the survey data are mentioned. Tables and about 25 references are included. Appendixes include supporting data, a list of participating agencies, and other information.
