DESCRIPTIVE EXAMINATION OF THE SEATTLE (WA) POLICE DEPARTMENT'S USE OF COMPACT VEHICLES (MAINLY THE DODGE DART EQUIPPED WITH THE 318 CUBIC INCH V-8 ENGINE) FOR ENFORCEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE POOL OPERATION.
Abstract
TEST RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE COMPACTS, WHICH REPLACED FULL AND INTERMEDIATE-SIZED PLYMOUTH FURY AND SATELLITE MODELS, HAD BETTER MANEUVERABILITY AND GAS MILEAGE, COULD OUT-ACCELERATE THE BIGGER CARS UP TO 60 MILES PER HOUR, AND COULD COME TO A CONTROLLED STOP IN A SHORTER DISTANCE. ALSO NOTED WAS A 21 PER CENT DECREASE IN PATROL CAR TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND THE NEARLY TOTAL ACCEPTANCE OF THE DART BY THE OFFICERS ACTUALLY USING THE CARS.
