The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has identified provisions of the law that affect victims and their involvement in the criminal justice system.
Abstract
Every legal issue covered by the AARP includes background and current status information, as well as commentary on the issue's implications for older victims. The issues concern victim rights, assistance, compensation, restitution, and participation at key points of the judicial process. The issues also deal with protection from intimidation, bail law amendments, restriction of victim address information, confidentiality of victim counseling, and funding for the treatment of sexual assault victims. Additionally, the issues focus on the admissibility of hearsay testimony at preliminary hearings, speedy disposition and trial, victim notification of court schedule changes, secure waiting areas in court settings, victim attendance at trials, return of property, victim participation in parole hearings, and prohibitions on profit from criminal activity. Additional sources of information on crime victimization are noted in an appendix.
