In Israel, changes have occurred in legislation and in operational policies of the Israeli police service to be more responsive to the needs of crime victims.
Abstract
The Israeli police service has made several improvements in its response to crimes committed against individuals--shorter response time to reported offenses, speedier and smoother case handling to minimize aggravation to the victim, protecting the victim's dignity and privacy at all stages of the criminal investigation, providing information to victims on the course of the criminal investigation and the indictment, and providing information to victims about agencies that can help them. The focus is on victims of domestic violence, victims of sexual assault and abuse, and helpless victims. The latter category of victims includes individuals who are helpless by reason of age, illness, physical or mental disability, or intellectual competence. Modifications made to legislation and judicial procedures to help crime victims are noted, as well as operational improvements and innovations by the Israeli police service. 2 photographs
