This workbook presents a classroom exercise on how to investigate a homicide.
Abstract
The workbook is designed to accommodate a semester of weekly in-class investigation. It suggests that the class begin with an informal, open reading of a portion of the text. This will allow instructors to clarify vocabulary, narrative, and pronunciation. Next, students should re-read the chapter for individual understanding of the homicide and subsequent investigation before they answer the questions within each chapter. Then the students should form small groups to compare and discuss their individual findings, identity of suspect(s), and proof for an arrest and criminal filing. Students in each group must consider and challenge each other's input with a critical mind and detective reasoning. The class should select a moderator to keep each student involved, log the group's agreed upon investigative findings and opinions, and report on them. Finally, the students get together for class discussion, and turn in their individual worksheets. The workbook includes copies of documents that are part of the investigation.
