This guide examines citizen gun ownership as a home security tactic and reviews the laws of self-defense in the 50 States and the District of Columbia.
Abstract
Discussed first are issues that an individual should consider before buying a gun. A review of basic home security measures covers doors, windows, locks, keys, lighting, landscaping, burglar alarms, and community crime prevention programs. Various types of handguns and ammunition are described, along with firing techniques. Also examined are types of shotguns, firing the shotgun, and defensive shooting as opposed to target shooting. The guide addresses contingency plans for responding to an intruder inside the home, but emphasizes that a confrontation should be avoided if possible. Following an overview of legal doctrines governing the use of deadly force in self-defense, the book summarizes self-defense laws in each State. Footnotes, photos, diagrams, and an index.
