Abstract
The analysis notes that links between alcohol abuse and violence have been recognized for many years. However, new varieties of violence have emerged in relation to the abuse and distribution of crack cocaine and have included apparently random homicides of people involved in drug dealing. Recent research has also distinguished between violence among drug traffickers, violent crimes committed to obtain money for drugs, and violence committed under the influence of drugs. The individual papers focus on violence in crack distribution networks in New York City and Detroit; correlations between drug abuse and domestic violence; issues related to gangs and juvenile delinquency; the relationship between prostitution, drugs, and violence; the limitations of police data on these issues; and Goldstein's tripartite model of the links between drugs and violence.
