Abstract
Topics covered include the history of law enforcement (early development through the English experience and beyond); Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies; careers in law enforcement; and police operations. Also discussed are history of criminal courts, American court structures, and juvenile court processes. Five chapters focus on various aspects of criminal court procedures, followed by discussion of the history of corrections, including probation and parole. The text discusses Federal and State correctional systems, local jails, and careers in corrections. Chapters on institutional operations (classification of prisons and inmates, institutional treatment programs, social relations of male and female inmates), and community corrections (residential corrections, probation and parole, and current issues and future trends in corrections) conclude the text.
