This manual is offered as a curriculum guide and resource for persons who teach introductory courses for addiction counselors at the community college level; the focus is on training addiction counselors, and the manual is not meant to include all workers in the field.
Abstract
While the manual is structured as a course, it can be used in other settings and formats. The quantity of material is designed for 44 to 52 classroom contact hours but instructors are encouraged to be flexible. Each unit in the curriculum has a uniform format: preliminary comments, learning objectives, supplemental material for the instructor, handouts and overheads, classroom exercises, and further readings and resources. Curriculum topics encompass prevalence and costs of alcohol and other drug problems, relevant policy and psychological issues, addiction models, drug classifications, assessment, diagnosis, referral, treatment, recovery, and relapse. Other curriculum topics concern family issues, diverse populations and cultural perspectives, social and environmental issues, prevention, comorbidity, legal and ethical issues, and intravenous drug use and HIV/AIDS. Appendixes provide listings of online resources and technical assistance publications, a bibliography, and a treatment improvement protocol. References, tables, and figures
