This study provides information on the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in its role as a repository for victim complaints as well as a conduit for law enforcement.
Abstract
The report provides specific details about various Internet crimes, their victims and the perpetrators. Results indicate that while cyber criminals have become more creative in devising ways to separate Internet users from their money, IC3 has successfully evolved to keep pace with emerging trends and technology, becoming an indispensible asset to victims of online crime and to law enforcement. This study demonstrates the pervasiveness of online crime and its effects on people in all demographic groups. The effects of online crime not only cut across all demographic groups, but span the globe. Also discussed in this study are the techniques that IC3 employs to continually adapt its methods to meet the needs of the public as well as law enforcement. IC3 provides the latest technological tools to assist law enforcement in bringing perpetrators to justice and has demonstrated its ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of Internet crime. Not only does the combined power of IC3's CMS, ICSIS and Automatch streamline the way complaints are processed and referred, it provides expert analysis to law enforcement which serves to subsequently fosters greater collaboration between investigators in multiple jurisdictions.
