THIS 1966 REPORT ON ILLICIT DRUG TRAFFIC INDICATES FEW MAJOR CHANGES AS COMPARED WITH THE PREVIOUS 2 YEARS. CONSIDERABLE TRAFFIC EXISTS IN NATURAL DRUGS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES, BUT NO SYNTHETIC DRUGS WERE SEIZED IN 1966.
Abstract
ACCORDING TO REPORTS, DRUG TRAFFIC IN AFRICA APPEARS TO BE DECREASING AND IS NOT A SERIOUS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, STATISTICS ARE PROBABLY INCOMPLETE FOR THIS AREA. IN SOUTH AMERICA, COCAINE TRAFFIC REMAINS AT A HIGH LEVEL, ALTHOUGH 20 ILLICIT LABORATORIES PRODUCING OR PURIFYING COCAINE WERE RAIDED DURING THE YEAR. THE U.S. REPORTS 1 DRUG SEIZURE OF 95,000 GRAMS OF HEROIN WHICH CAME FROM FRANCE. THE MAIN PROBLEMS IN EUROPE ARE ILLICIT TRAFFIC IN OPIUM AND ITS DERIVATIVES, BROUGHT TO EUROPE FOR REFINEMENT AND SHIPPING. ALSO, THE CANNABIS PROBLEM IN EUROPE IS BECOMING MORE SERIOUS, WITH SEIZURES RISING STEADILY IN THE PAST 3 YEARS. LARGE SEIZURES OF RAW OPIUM, MORPHINE, AND CANNABIS FROM THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST CONFIRM THESE AREAS AS BEING MAJOR CENTERS OF DRUG PRODUCTION AND INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC, WHILE THE SITUATION IN THE FAR EAST REMAINS VERY GRAVE, WITH THE DRUG TRAFFIC AND OPIUM CROPS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. TABLES PRESENT DATA ON RAW OPIUM, PREPARED OPIUM, MORPHINE, DIACETYLMORPHINE, COCAINE, CANNABIS, SYNTHETIC DRUGS, NARCOTICS, AND HALLUCINOGENIC DRUGS. DATA IS ALSO GIVEN ON INTERNATIONAL POLICE COOPERATION. (PRG)
