This paper presents the results of the 1990 International Best Police Vehicle Design Competition in categories of Municipal Agency (over 100 officers), Municipal Agency (under 100 officers), Sheriff's Agency, Federal or State Agency, and Special Purpose Vehicle.
Abstract
Three judges evaluated 550 entries (about 2500 photographs) regarding graphic elements in the designs and their coordination, complementation, and practical and functional application as well as distinct visual identification of the police agency, projection of authority and professionalism of the department, identity of the community, and safety features. First place winners were awarded a plaque and a cash award of $250, whereas second and third place winners received certificates. The jet ski used to patrol waterways around North Miami Beach (FL) and the New Zealand police car with its red color scheme were recognized with a special mention from the judges because of their interesting design or use. The main design trends in this second annual competition focused on professionalism, safety, and community involvement. List of all states entered in the contest is appended. Photographs.
