Focusing on several different countries, these six papers examine issues related to the crime control roles of judges, the criminal justice system, and the media and the experiences of victims in courts.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the role of judges during a time of political change in East Germany, the role of the criminal justice system and actions outside the criminal justice system to prevent and control crime, and changes in sentencing practices in the United States in recent years. Additional papers consider the influence of newspapers and broadcast media on fear of crime and public attitudes toward criminal justice system policies in the United Kingdom and the United States, the experiences and roles of victims in court in Canada, and the attitude of the judiciary in the Netherlands towards government and the media.
