Conference participants, playing the roles of police, fire, and corrections officials on a public safety board, argue the pros and cons of three hypothetical public safety issues involving human rights in order to gain the experience of being on and addressing a public safety board.
Abstract
Arguments on both sides of the issue in all three cases are usually based on Equal Opportunity Commission rules. The cases involve a Hispanic police officer alleging that racial discrimination on the force drove him to resign, a national women's organization requesting that more female corrections officers be transferred to male institutions, and sex discrimination in a police department. In each case, 'citizens' present their case to the 'board,' whose members argue the issue and ultimately reach a settlement. Both sides attempt to reflect the realities of public safety board meetings; tempers flare and sexist comments are heard, although the tone is often temperate. The session closes with a critique of the way the issues were handled and suggestions of additional tactics to use when addressing or serving on a public safety board.
