By the end of the third program year, the Institute for Civil Justice had completed work on 23 projects, and 11 studies were still in progress.
Abstract
Institute projects focused on U.S. workers' compensation, workplace safety, incentives for product safety in the marketplace, product labeling, special education for the handicapped, occupational disease, and judicial arbitration. Other studies looked at reducing pretrial delay, cutting the backlog of civil court cases, models of legal decisionmaking, and other factors involved in litigation. Medical malpractice concerns, civil jury verdicts and awards, the public costs of resolving civil cases in the United States, costs of asbestos litigation, and the interaction of liability and compensation systems were additional subjects studied. Future projects are listed.
