A mobile drop-in center provides treatment, assistance, and education on AIDS prevention to prostitutes in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Abstract
Sponsored by the HAP Foundation, the center is parked in the controlled street-prostitution district of the city every night from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. It contains a lounge, kitchenette, toilet, shower, and medical consulting room. Two outreach staff members sell condoms and provide consultation; two nights a week, a general practitioner provides consultation and contraceptives, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and vaccination against hepatitis B. Another major objective of the center is to provide education and counseling on AIDS prevention through both direct and indirect prevention campaigns. During the last 5 years, some 480 street prostitutes have visited the center. 2 references
