This report projects the size of the inmate population under New York State's Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) by fiscal year from 1992-1993 up to 1999-2000; data are included for inmate admissions and releases, as well as the number of inmates under custody during all or part of each fiscal year.
Abstract
The projections rely heavily on the expected number of felony cases to be disposed in New York courts and on projected outcomes of these case dispositions. On March 31, 1992, the DOCS inmate population totaled 61,246. Over a span of 19 years, the inmate population increased by 8.3 percent annually, to reach the 61,246 figure, and admissions consistently exceeded releases. Inmate population growth throughout the projection period is expected to continue these trends. By March 31, 2000, the inmate population is expected to reach 72,776. Data are provided on estimated court commitments, returned parole and conditional release violators, parole releases, parole and conditional violator rereleases, and initial and straight reappearance hearing releases. 7 tables and 1 figure
