Abstract
Wisconsin ranked 41st in the Nation in reported violent crimes, with a rate of 279 per 100,000 population. This rate was considerably lower than that of the Nation (757 per 100,000) and of the region (607 per 100,000). The State ranked 37th in reported property crimes, with a rate of 4,081 per 100,000 population. This rate also was lower than that of the Nation (4,903 per 100,000) and of the region (4,368 per 100,000). Wisconsin's rates per 100,000 and rankings for the individual categories of crimes were as follows: murder, 4.4 (35th); rape, 26.6 (44th); robbery, 121 (32nd); aggravated assault, 127 (43rd); burglary, 699 (43rd); theft, 2,946 (26th); and motor vehicle theft, 436 (26th). Florida had the highest rates for aggravated assault, burglary, theft, overall violent, and overall property crimes; Louisiana's top-ranking murder rate (17.4) was more than three times that of Wisconsin.
