This publication compares Wisconsin crime rates with those of other States with the crime rate defined as the number of reported crimes for every 100,000 residents.
Abstract
Crime categories included in the publication are seven of the eight crimes comprising the Crime Index of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Data show that, over the past 6 years, crime rates for the United States as a whole and for the midwest have increased more than the rate for Wisconsin. In 1990, Wisconsin ranked 43rd in reported violent crimes with a crime rate of 264.8 offenses per 100,000 residents. This ranking is considerably lower than the U.S. rate of 731.8 and the midwest rate of 593.9. Also in 1990, Wisconsin ranked 37th in reported property crimes with a crime rate of 4,133 offenses per 100,000 residents. This ranking is somewhat less than the midwest rate of 4,508 and much less than the U.S. rate of 5,088. During 1990, Wisconsin ranked 35th in murder and non-negligent manslaughter with a rate of 4.6 murders per 100,000 residents. Wisconsin's rate is considerably lower than both the U.S. rate of 8.4 and the midwest rate of 6.4. In 1990, Wisconsin ranked 47th in forcible rape with a rate of 20.7 per 100,000 residents. This ranking is about half the U.S. rate of 41.2 and the midwest rate of 42.6. Wisconsin ranked 31st in reported robbery offenses in 1990 with a rate of 112.7 per 100,000 residents; this rate is well below the U.S. rate of 257 and the midwest rate of 198.5. Wisconsin ranked 43rd in aggravated assaults, 41st in reported burglaries, 28th in theft offenses, and 27th in motor vehicle thefts. These rates are all below the U.S. and midwest rates. Crime statistics are tabulated by State. 6 tables and 3 figures
