THIS BOOK PROVIDES THOSE WHO MANAGE WITH A PERSONAL STUDY GUIDE FOR IMPROVING MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS. IT IS WRITTEN FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING NEW MANAGERIAL SKILLS.
Abstract
IN THE DISCUSSION OF WHAT EFFECTIVE MANAGERS DO IN COMPARISON TO INEFFECTIVE MANAGERS, THREE MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF MANAGING ARE HIGHLIGHTED: THE INFORMATIONAL FUNCTION, THE INTERPERSONAL FUNCTION, AND THE DECISIONAL FUNCTION. EFFECTIVE MANAGERS HAVE CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS; THEY HAVE A HIGH CONCERN FOR PEOPLE AND PRODUCTIVITY; THEY SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME MANAGING; THEY USE A GENERAL STYLE IN THAT THEY HAVE FEWER CONTACTS WITH SUBORDINATES THAN DO INEFFECTIVE MANAGERS BUT THEY DISCUSS WITH THEIR SUBORDINATES THE OVERALL SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF AN ASSIGNMENT, SO THAT THE EMPLOYEES ARE ABLE TO PROCEED ON THEIR OWN TO FULFILL THE PROJECT REQUIREMENTS; THEY BUILD GROUP PRIDE; THEY KEEP PEOPLE INFORMED; THEY ALLOW EMPLOYEES TO INFLUENCE THEM; THEY TAKE PRESSURE OFF IN A CRISIS RATHER THAN INCREASE IT; THEY MINIMIZE STATUS DISTINCTIONS; AND THEY ARE WILLING TO DO DETAIL WORK. TOPICS COVERED UNDER THE INFORMATIONAL FUNCTION INCLUDE IMPROVING COMMUNICATION SKILLS, HOW TO MEET WITH SUCCESS, AND IMPLEMENTING ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT. HIGHLIGHTED UNDER THE INTERPERSONAL FUNCTION ARE SELF-ESTEEM AND THE SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY; IMPROVING MOTIVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY; AND MANAGING DIFFERENCES AND HANDLING CONFLICTS. TOPICS UNDER THE DECISIONAL FUNCTION INCLUDE HOW TO MAKE A GOOD DECISION, PROBLEM FINDING AND PROBLEM SOLVING, TIME MANAGEMENT, AND THE CHALLENGE OF MANAGING. IN ADDITION, INSIGHTS ARE OFFERED INTO DEVELOPING MORE SUBTLE MANAGERIAL SKILLS, SUCH AS USING INFORMAL ASPECTS OF ORGANIZATIONS FOR PRODUCTIVITY, OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO CHANGE, AND USING INCOMPLETE INFORMATION. EXERCISES, EXAMPLES, AND CASE STUDIES REPRESENTING A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES EXPLAIN WHEN AND HOW TO USE THE SKILLS. EACH CHAPTER HAS REFERENCES, AND AN APPENDIX IS PROVIDED. TABLES SUPPLEMENT THE TEXT. (PRG).
