This article discusses improving victim services for crime victims with mental retardation.
Abstract
The Arc of the United States, a national organization on mental retardation, has issued a position statement that includes the following principles: (1) Individuals with mental retardation shall have access to habilitation, training and environments that enhance their abilities to protect themselves from criminal victimization and their abilities to avoid possible criminal activities; (2) Individuals with mental retardation who are victims of crime shall have their rights protected; (3) Individuals with mental retardation who have witnessed crimes shall be provided the accommodations that might enable them to be helpful witnesses and testify appropriately; and (4) Training in the disabilities and capabilities of individuals with mental retardation shall be provided to defense lawyers, prosecutors, judges, court personnel, forensic evaluators, law enforcement personnel, victim assistance providers and criminal justice system policymakers in order to improve the likelihood that individuals with mental retardation will be treated fairly.
