Abstract
IN PHASE TWO OF AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE ITS OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAMS, THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS CONTRACTED WITH THE CENTER FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT A SERIES OF FIVE REGIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF OF ITS CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. THE SELECTION OF THE 106 PARTICIPANTS, WHO HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DELIVERY OF OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION IN THE BUREAU OF PRISONS, IS DESCRIBED. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOPS WERE AS FOLLOWS: (1) TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR DISCUSSION OF PHASE ONE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND FINDINGS, WHICH PERTAINED TO THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS DELIVERY PROGRAMS AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT TRAINING; (2) TO DELINEATE AND DISCUSS ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION; AND (3) TO PROVIDE RELEVANT STAFF DEVELOPMENT TRAINING ON SELECTED TOPICS FOR OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS AND SUPERVISORS. EVALUATION OF THE WORKSHOPS WAS ACCOMPLISHED USING QUESTIONNAIRES COMPLETED BY WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS. A DAILY QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO WORKSHOP STAFF AFTER EACH DAY'S ACTIVITIES. A FINAL EVALUATION CONDUCTED ON THE LAST DAY OF THE WORKSHOP FOCUSED ON THE WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES AND PARTICIPANT ATTITUDES TOWARD VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE WORKSHOP. EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST WORKSHOP IN PHILADELPHIA, PA., RATINGS AT EACH OF THE FOUR SUBSEQUENT WORKSHOP SITES (ATLANTA, GA., DALLAS, TEX., KANSAS CITY, MO., AND SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.) WERE BETWEEN 'GOOD' AND 'EXCELLENT.' CHANGES PROMPTED BY THE EVALUATION OF THE PHILADELPHIA WORKSHOP HELPED IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE LATER WORKSHOPS. PARTICIPANTS WERE GENERALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE ACCOMMODATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, PRESENTERS, AND THE HANDOUT MATERIAL. APPENDIXES CONSIST OF WORKSHOP AGENDA, PARTICIPANT LISTS, BUREAU OF PRISONS VOCATIONAL EDUCATION COURSE LISTINGS, EVALUATION FORMS, AND DAILY EVALUATION RESULTS. SEE ALSO NCJ-32910. (RCB)
