This study investigated the link between child abuse and delinquency using data collected from a sample of 449 youths who, in 1982, were between the ages of 14 and 17 and students at several schools in west central Florida.
Abstract
Data were obtained in 1990 from the Client Information System of the State Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services on client and family demographics, the units providing services to the client, services that were provided, and referrals. All reports of delinquency and abuse were recorded. The study found a relationship between abuse and delinquency. Juveniles with delinquent referrals were more likely to have been referred for child abuse; the reverse relationship existed as well. While there was no significant difference in the ratio of white and nonwhite referrals, there was a difference in the ratio of male to female referrals. Higher numbers of males were in both the abused/delinquent and delinquent groups. 2 tables and 21 references
