This article examines implications and applications of the Internet in policing.
Abstract
The article looks at how to apply the Internet, and how to find the best sites and make the best use of time available for searching. It provides the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for a site that reviews the top seven search engines, programs used to find things on the Internet. It describes the process of “bookmarking” sites that are especially interesting and may be useful in the future. The article also provides URLs for sites that are especially informative about how to use the Internet and sites that have information of special interest to police and other law enforcement personnel. It addresses concerns that the new technology will replace people doing certain jobs and briefly discusses costs. The implications and applications of the Internet can be viewed from two perspectives. It is powerful, global, fast, inexpensive, and it is important to be online. Or, it is frustrating, expensive, unreliable, and gets in the way of useful work. People, and how they use the Internet, perhaps make the difference. Notes
