GUIDELINES FOR USE BY NEW YORK SCHOOLS IN FULFILLING THEIR MANDATED RESPONSIBILITIES UNDER A LAW DESIGNED TO PROTECT ABUSED AND MALTREATED CHILDREN ARE OFFERED.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW IS TO ENCOURAGE MORE COMPLETE REPORTING, THE SWIFT AND COMPETENT INVESTIGATION OF REPORTS, AND THE PROVISION OF REHABILITATIVE SERVICES TO CHILDREN AND PARENTS WHO ARE REPORTED. THE LAW SPECIFIES THE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF MANDATED REPORTERS. SCHOOL OFFICIALS ACCOUNT FOR 27 PERCENT OF ALL MANDATED REPORTS TO THE STATE CENTRAL REGISTER. THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ENCOURAGES SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS TO DEVELOP WRITTEN POLICIES AND PROCEDURES TO GUIDE SCHOOL PERSONNEL IN MAKING REFERRALS. THE DEPARTMENT ALSO ENCOURAGES EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT TO ASSIGN A STAFF MEMBER TO ACT AS LIAISON WITH THE LOCAL CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES UNIT. THE QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES OF THE LIAISON ARE OUTLINED, WITH REFERENCE TO THE LIAISON'S ROLE IN ACTUAL CASE REPORTING, CASE COORDINATION, TRAINING , AND DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION IS APPENDED. (LKM)
