As an outgrowth of the United Nations Seventh Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, 23 countries provided information on national crime prevention activities.
Abstract
This report focuses on new dimensions of criminality and crime prevention in the context of development. The Seventh Congress adopted the Milan Plan of Action and the Guiding Principles for Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in the Context of Development and a New International Economic Order, which are outlined here. Specific issues which were addressed by the 23 country reports include crime prevention and law reform, crime prevention and socioeconomic development, improvements in the criminal justice system, measures against national discrimination and apartheid, international cooperation, and international collaboration against drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime. The Seventh Congress also adopted resolutions dealing with victims of crime, juvenile crime, and the formulation and application of UN standards and norms in criminal justice. 14 notes
