This report describes the initiatives taken by governmental agencies in Ontario, Canada in response to 26 recommendations made in 1984 by Canadian ministers at all levels of government and focusing on ways of addressing the problem of wife beating.
Abstract
Actions taken include reviewing all current and proposed programs, agreeing on a structure for a coordinated interministry approach to program delivery, and establishing a strategic direction to guide Ontario's efforts in the future. Specific measures included providing ongoing education to police, provision of assistance to police forces that provide information and assistance to victims of family violence, development of victim impact statements, improved data collection, and issuance of guidelines regarding interim assistance to immigrant women who are battered. Further measures included funding for counseling programs for victims, funding for a media information campaign, and establishment of a uniform data collection system.
