RESULTS OF AN EXPERIMENT CONDUCTED IN FOUR PROBATION AREAS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM TO DETERMINE THE VALUE OF PROVIDING MORE INTENSIVE, SPECIALIZED TREATMENT FOR HIGH RISK PROBATIONERS.
Abstract
THE EXPERIMENT PRIMARILY INVOLVED MALES 17 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER WHO HAD BEEN PLACED ON PROBATION. THOSE SUBJECTS PLACED IN THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUPS WERE GIVEN MORE INTENSIVE CONTACTS AND COUNSELING AS WELL AS MORE FREQUENT MEETINGS WITH THE COUNSELING STAFF FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME THAN THOSE PAROLEES PLACED IN THE CONTROL GROUPS. IN ADDITION, PROBATION OFFICERS DEALING WITH THOSE IN THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP WERE INVOLVED WITH THE CLIENT'S FAMILY AND ASSOCIATES. ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT DEMONSTRATED THAT WITH RESPECT TO SUBSEQUENT CONVICTIONS WITHIN THE YEAR FOLLOWING ENTRY INTO THE PROGRAM, EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT AS OPPOSED TO CONTROL TREATMENT MADE NO DIFFERENCE. THERE WAS A SUGGESTION, HOWEVER, THAT THE OFFENDER WITH LOW CRIMINAL TENDENCIES AND FEW PERSONAL PROBLEMS WAS LIKELY TO HAVE A MORE SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME UNDER THE EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT. ...EB
