This article surveys the current literature regarding the importance of a college education on police officer performance.
Abstract
Many national organizations have urged police departments to require that prospective officers complete an undergraduate college degree. Various analysts have argued that education is linked to police professionalism and to police performance, particularly in terms of conflict resolution skills and the use of police discretionary powers within the restraints imposed by the Bill of Rights. There has been some research showing that educational level has a positive impact on job training performance, which in turn correlates to later job performance. Another study analyzed the relationship between educational level and passing rate on a State licensing examination. The results indicated level of education was associated with scores on the exam. 2 tables and 14 references
