THE PHILOSOPHY, GOALS, AND CURRICULUM OF THE CORRECTIONS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OF THE ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY ARE PRESENTED; COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED STUDENT ACTIVITIES ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
A LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF THE CAREER PATTERNS OF GRADUATES FROM CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE PROGRAMS IN ILLINOIS CONCLUDED THAT THERE WAS A STRONG NEED FOR INTERNSHIPS AND SUPERVISED FIELD EXPERIENCES. BENEFITS TO BOTH THE STUDENTS AND TO THE CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES WERE NOTED. THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AT ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY IS DESIGNED TO BETTER PREPARE THE STUDENT TO ENTER THE CORRECTIONS/CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD UPON GRADUATION. IT IS INTENDED THAT STUDENTS WILL CORRELATE THEORY AND PRACTICE AND BE STIMULATED TO OBSERVE, EXAMINE, EVALUATE, AND ANALYZE THEIR RESPECTIVE AGENCIES. REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRAM ENTRANCE INCLUDE A MINIMUM GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 2.2 IN ALL CORRECTIONS COURSES AND COMPLETION OF THE COURSES: INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE SCIENCES, PSYCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES APPLIED TO CORRECTIONAL COUNSELING SERVICES. SIX CREDIT HOURS OF INTERNSHIP IN A CORRECTIONAL SETTING ARE REQUIRED FOR COMPLETION OF A MASTER'S DEGREE. IN MOST CASES, INTERNSHIP AGENCIES DO NOT PAY STUDENTS FOR THEIR WORK. FOOTNOTES AND APPENDIXES ARE PROVIDED IN THE MANUAL. (LWM) FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM. ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE TO INTERNS INCLUDE WORKING IN ADULT AND JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS AND RESIDENTIAL AGENCIES, PROBATION AND PAROLE AGENCIES, COURTS, LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, DEFENSE AND PROSECUTORIAL AENCIES, AND OFFENDER
