Abstract
In an attempt to provide an objective understanding and knowledge of illegal drugs, this comprehensive reference guide begins with a look into the discovery, origin, and history of the "forbidden fruit" or illegal drugs. This review of history includes a look at a century of legislation to control the flow and use of illegal drugs throughout the United States. In addition, a look at the chemistry of illegal drugs and their effect on the brain are reviewed. In Part Two of the guide, a comprehensive alphabetized listing of more than 170 illegal drugs in the United States is presented. An illegal drug is any drug that is listed on Schedule I or Schedule II of the Controlled Substances Act. The drugs are grouped according to similarity and explain their history, current use, chemistry, and the effects of each of the drugs. The guide offers information on self-help resources that include: drug identification, Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Coordinators across the United States, DEA division offices, and National Guard Counterdrug Coordinators.
