RAPID METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR THE DETECTION OF SAFETY WINDSHIELD GLASS AND FOR ITS DIFFERENTIATION FROM ORDINARY ANNEALED GLASS.
Abstract
THE METHOD INVOLVES THE OBSERVATION OF RESIDUAL STRESS PRESENT IN SMALL PIECES OF GLASS BY THE USE OF POLARIZED LIGHT. THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THE EFFECTS ON THIS STRESS WHEN THE DIMENSIONS OF THE GLASS FRAGMENTS ARE VARIED. THIS TECHNIQUE IS CONSIDERED TO BE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST TO FORENSIC SCIENTISTS INVESTIGATING SUCH INCIDENTS AS HIT-AND-RUN. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
