A computer using a lattice electronic typewriter and a Chinese character disk operating system has many advantages over the traditional typewriter, such as ease of operations, extensive functions, and easy composition; the identification of lattice electronic printers, however, poses new problems for document examiners.
Abstract
Printing samples were collected from 31 lattice electronic printers, including dot matrix, thermal, laser, ink jet, electrostatic, and electric burning printers. Questioned document evidence was compared with printer samples. It was found that different printer types can be distinguished based on printing traces and paper characteristics; that different models of dot matrix and thermal printers can be identified by comparing character pattern, matrix size, inter-word space, and other characteristics; and that printers can be identified by such unusual features as ribbon, print head, Chinese font library, and print head carriage. 4 tables and 8 figures
