Abstract

Published by National Mentoring Resource Center, a program of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), this guide provides tips and pointers to help parents and caregivers decide whether a mentor is right for their young person and, if so, what kind of mentor and mentoring program might best suit their needs. The focus of this guide is on mentoring that takes place within a formal mentoring program where staff from the mentoring program officially match each young person with a mentor and provide ongoing supervision of the mentoring relationship. The guide provides information about why mentoring is important and how it can benefit young people; what to look for in a mentoring program and what to expect; and tips to get the most out of the mentoring program.
