Abstract
This booklet assists adults who work with children affected by a parent's arrest to explain the process to the child, to provide comfort and assurances about the parent's situation, and to assist the child and family to re- establish contact with the incarcerated family member. Chapter one contains a chart that shows what happens to persons after they are arrested. An explanation of each step and what the family can do follows the chart. Information on what happens to someone who is arrested covers arrest to sentencing, the lawyer, and the posting of bail. Other information addresses what happens to the arrested person's children. Guidelines pertain to services for children who are present at the arrest and children who are in foster care. Chapter two provides information that may be useful in locating, visiting, or assisting a person who is incarcerated. It explains how to locate an inmate, how to get to the mail or prison, how to get medical attention for the inmate, complaints about visitation, and how to find out when the inmate will come home. Chapter three is a resource guide for some organizations that provide services to inmates, their families, and their children. Chapter four is a bibliography of materials on subjects related to families of inmates. 152-item bibliography and appended information guide and phone numbers
