Canadian homicide statistics for 1961-82 cover victim-offender relationship (for 1980 and 1982), the sex and age of killers and victims (1982), victims' marital status (1978 and 1982), homicides cleared by police (1978-82), court case disposition (1978-82), and police officers murdered (1961-80).
Abstract
Data on homicides by type (murder, manslaughter, and infanticide) are provided for 1984, and the homicide rate is shown for 1961-84. Other tables address homicides in 14 countries for 1975-79, Canadian homicides by Province (1983), and police officers killed in 14 countries for 1961-80. Although Canada is the second largest nation in the world in land area, it has relatively few homicides. Despite the increase in homicides each year (from 223 to 668 for 1961-84), the annual homicide rate has generally remained below 3 per 100,000. The relatively high number of homicides cleared by the police and the high percentage of court convictions are apparently due to an effective law enforcement system. 11 tables and 1 figure.
