Abstract
The first chapter provides an introduction to homicide, including classification and definition, history, racial and ethnic factors, studies, and books and book reviews. The second chapter deals with statistics, presented by people, by place, and by time, and outlines a general epidemiology of homicide. Two subsequent chapters cover characteristics of the murderer and the victim, while another describes modes of murder, including automobile, medical, shooting, strangulation, sharp weapons, and poisoning. Causes of murder include psychiatric illness, drugs and alcohol, sexual motives, provocation, environmental causes, social/religious/cultural causes, medical causes, jealousy, politics, epilepsy, self-defense, money, animosity, and impulse. Homicide investigations are comprised of laboratory techniques, case reports, autopsies, psychological evaluations, and homicide or suicide determinations. The bibliography also covers assassination, legal aspects of homicide, and prevention and control measures.
