This book presents 16 essays on diverse aspects of continuing higher education practice in prison.
Abstract
On the one hand, the essays are descriptive and serve as a reference for current continuing education practice in adult prisons. On the other hand, they provide insight into the challenges and rewards prison higher education holds for those who are or wish to be involved in it. The volume's focus is on building programs that facilitate personal growth and self-actualization. To this end, some of the essays examine divergent views of corrections and education of inmates, particular prison education programs, and the problems and promise of prison teaching. Other essays explore the special difficulties of providing higher education to women prisoners and how the most basic assessment and evaluation tools can focus and improve efforts to deliver educational opportunities to those in confinement. Appended descriptions of the Federal Pell Grant Program and Pell grants for prisoners and a 210-item selected bibliography
