This article examines new approaches to the problems of youth and violence.
Abstract
The article maintains that, just as members of society are all responsible for the conditions young people face today, they are part of the solution as well. It calls for compassion for young people, who are as likely to be victims of violence as they are to be perpetrators. Eradicating teen violence involves eradicating the basis for violence perpetrated by police and teachers against poor children and people of color, and eradicating the violence of poverty and neglect. Young people can benefit from being part of a community that has shared ideals, goals and vision; a community in which every person is emboldened to be unique, interesting and different, yet within the parameters of a community’s mores and needs; a community with clear ideas of what is expected and what will be the result if expectations are not met; a society that provides consistency and continuity, mutual respect and a shared sense of future.
