The prevalence of health conditions at intake and all episodes of health care utilization during imprisonment are examined in a cohort of 366 male inmates.
Abstract
Many health problems were more frequent among these prisoners than among the general population, and the inmates visited the prison infirmary or its out-patient consultants more often than the general population uses community facilities. The reason for most of their visits was to seek care for current symptoms, diseases, and injuries. The need exists for more diagnostic, screening, and preventive services in this and similar prisons to help reduce future morbidity and mortality. (Author abstract)
