AN EVALUATION OF VOLUNTEER WORKERS IN HAWAII'S CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES BY THE VOLUNTEERS' SUPERVISORS IS DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
THE REPORT OUTLINES THE PURPOSES AND METHODS OF THE EVALUATION, SUMMARIZES FINDINGS, AND DRAWS CONCLUSIONS RELATIVE TO IMPROVEMENTS IN THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM. THIRTEEN SUPERVISORS COMPLETED 10-ITEM EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRES FOR 78 VOLUNTEERS AT 3 CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, PROVIDING EVALUATIONS OF 55 PERCENT OF THE VOLUNTEERS AT THESE BRANCHES. OVER 85 PERCENT OF THE EVALUATIONS WERE POSITIVE, 68 PERCENT RECOMMENDED THAT THE VOLUNTEER BE RETAINED WITHOUT CHANGING ASSIGNMENT, AND 21 PERCENT INDICATED THAT THE SUPERVISOR WOULD BE WILLING TO GIVE THE VOLUNTEER MORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND HIGHER JOB STATUS. THE MAJORITY OF VOLUNTEERS EVALUATED WERE SAID TO GET ALONG WELL WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH STAFF MEMBERS. MOST WERE ASSESSED AS RESPONDING WELL TO SUPERVISION, DEMONSTRATING A HIGH LEVEL OF INITIATIVE, AND BEING DEPENDABLE. NEARLY ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS WERE FOUND TO BE INTERESTED IN THEIR WORK AND TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL THEIR EMOTIONS APPROPRIATELY. A COPY OF THE EVALUATION INSTRUMENT AND SUPPORTING DATA ARE APPENDED. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM EVALUATIONS BY OTHER CORRECTIONAL STAFF MEMBERS AND BY VOLUNTEERS ARE DOCUMENTED IN NCJ-48946 AND 48947. (LKM)
