Abstract
The bias categories are race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity or national origin. Hate crime data are tabulated for 11 traditional offense categories. Murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, aggravated assault, simple assault, and intimidation are classified as crimes against persons. Robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, and destruction or vandalism of property are classified as crimes against property. Hate crime data are submitted to the UCR Program by city, county, and State law enforcement agencies in various ways. Tables showing totals for 10,730 law enforcement agencies participating in the UCR Program in 1998 are provided. The reported incidents involved 9,235 offenses, 9,722 victims, and 7,489 known offenders. Data are also presented on levels of State participation in the UCR Program, the population represented, the number of law enforcement agencies submitting incident reports, and the total number of incidents reported. A directory of UCR programs is appended. 18 tables
