This article (the second in a series) discusses physical training techniques for law enforcement professionals and firefighters.
Abstract
The author describes a number of specific exercises and drills intended to develop the physical ability to respond quickly, to improve eye-hand coordination, to move quickly from one foot, and to be comfortable with rapid footwork. The article encourages team competition in these strength and agility building exercises, as the results are achieved more quickly, and participants respond well to competition. Finally, the need for flexibility training as a component of intense exercise is discussed, and includes martial arts. Most important is proper rest, recovery periods, and nutrition during intense exercise. The author emphasizes that this intense level of training must not be disabling in any way, as law enforcement and firefighting professionals must be in a constant state of readiness. Finally, the author discusses the use of performance-enhancing supplements, discouraging the use of any products that are not food, and suggesting that the risks will never outweigh the benefits.
