This handbook was written to help victims of crime in Alaska understand the criminal justice system and their role within it.
Abstract
This handbook is designed to help victims of crimes understand the criminal justice system so that they will feel more comfortable with their involvement in the system. It is designed to empower crime victims by giving them the tools necessary to influence the criminal justice system as well as for healing themselves. The handbook shows crime victims the steps taken by various criminal justice agents after a crime has occurred. The roles of police officers, prosecutors, attorneys, judges, and jurors are explained as well as what happens during medical examinations and court hearings. The handbook also expounds upon the steps that are taken after a conviction of a defendant is won; namely it takes the reader through the sentencing hearing, what the different types of incarceration mean, and the meanings of probation and parole. Restitution, restorative, and therapeutic justice are also explained. Finally, the appeal and post conviction process is examined. The remainder of the handbook offers crime victims a look at their legal rights and victim assistance programs. It also explains the laws concerning juvenile offenders. The last few pages offer a directory of statewide services for crime victims.
