These 21 papers are intended to provide a comprehensive overview of issues related to organized crime and to stimulate thinking about the ideas and methodologies involved in conceptualizing, measuring, controlling, and containing organized crime.
Abstract
Two background papers discuss the definition of organized crime and present a historical perspective on the topic. Three additional papers examine models of organized crime and research on organized crime in the United States. Further papers focus on organized crime in a regulatory agency in Philadelphia, the organized crime neighborhoods of Chicago, organized crime among specific racial and ethnic groups, corruption and racketeering in the New York City school boards, money laundering, and the role of organized crime in prostitution and pornography. Further papers focus on law enforcement strategies and discuss Federal strike forces, intelligence and analysis, the use of crime commissions, the role of police and prosecutors, the use of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law, and the witness security program.
