This handbook presents an overview of court policies, procedures, and terminology and the responsibilities of the judicial secretary.
Abstract
After discussing the secretary's role and outlining the structure of the Federal judiciary, the first section delineates the roles and responsibility of court personnel, including judges and their staffs, court executives and clerks, and probation and pretrial service officers. Related agencies and their personnel also are reviewed. The second section examines court calendaring and caseflow management. The third section examines various office procedures such as case management, files, correspondence, and recordkeeping. General administrative matters, including qualification standards and employee benefits and reimbursements, also are detailed. Secretarial conduct and protocol are covered. The responsibilities of the various national courts (e.g., appeals, claims, international trade) are defined, and the managerial structure of the Federal judicial system is delineated. The final section provides definitions and describes processes in both civil and criminal litigation. Subject index.
