ASPECTS OF INMATE LIFE AND THE ROLE OF THE CORRECTIONAL PSYCHIATRISTS, AS DISCUSSED AT A 1968 CONFERENCE OF FEDERAL PRISON PSYCHIATRISTS.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION ON STRESS AND COPING SERVES AS THE READER'S GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF INCARCERATION AS THEY MANIFEST THEMSELVES FROM THE INITIAL DAYS OF CONFINEMENT TO THE PERIOD PRIOR TO RELEASE, THE FOLLOWING CHAPTERS FOCUS ON INMATE SEXUALITY AND VIOLENCE AND THE PRISON PSYCHIATRISTS'S INVOLVEMENT IN DEALING WITH THESE PROBLEMS. SECTION FOUR REVIEWS SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED BY THE PSYCHIATRIST AS HE ENTERS THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, INCLUDING ATTEMPTS AT PHILOSOPHICAL INDOCTRINATION AND OTHER EFFECTS OF THE CORRECTIONAL MILIEU. OTHER MATERIAL EXAMINES THE ROLE OF THE PSYCHIATRIST VIS-A-VIS THE CORRECTIONAL STAFF, AND THE PSYCHIATRIST'S INTERACTION WITH THE LEGAL PROCESS, INCLUDING THE COURT AND BOARD OF PAROLE. THE FINAL SECTION DEALS WITH CORRECTIONAL PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
