This manual is designed to enhance the ability of Juvenile Services Agency staff to identify health problems among youth, refer youth for services, and counsel youth concerning health issues relative to their respective positions.
Abstract
This manual has also been prepared for institutional workers, private vendors, staff consultants, probation officers, and intake and aftercare workers. Each unit contains basic information on health conditions, discussion questions, a "key points" quiz, and ideas for use of the information. There are several themes which are essential to understanding and carrying out the role the health worker can play in improving the health of youth who come through the juvenile justice system. One is that good health during adolescence plays a critical role in continuing health and development in adulthood. Others are that health, self-esteem, and rehabilitation are interrelated; being healthy depends on factors such as genetics, risk-taking behaviors, and self-image.
