SUGGESTIONS FOR A SCHOOL DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION PROGRAM EMPHASIZE ATTITUDE CONFRONTATION AND REDIRECTION, REINFORCEMENT OF POSITIVE BEHAVIOR, AND STUDENT PARTICIPATION.
Abstract
PREVENTION PROGRAMS WHICH FOCUS ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE HAVE NOT BEEN EFFECTIVE, BUT ACTIVITIES DEALING WITH REASONS FOR SUCH BEHAVIOR CAN BE VALUABLE. THIS BOOKLET SUGGESTS THAT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL COMMUNITY MUST BE INVOLVED IN CREATING AND OPERATING A PREVENTION PROGRAM, BUT THAT THE MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY RESTS WITH THE STUDENTS. IT FURTHER SUGGESTS THAT A COUNCIL CONSISTING OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND COMMUNITY BE FORMED AND IDENTIFIES THE COUNCIL'S RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING A COMPREHENSIVE COUNSELING SYSTEM TO DEAL WITH NONDRUG ABUSING STUDENTS AS WELL AS STUDENTS ENGAGING IN ALL TYPES OF SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR. QUALIFICATIONS FOR COUNSELORS FOR DESCRIBED AS WELL AS PUBLICIZING COUNSELING SERVICES THROUGH SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES, NEWSPAPERS, AND BULLETIN BOARDS. COUNSELING METHODS FOR GROUPS, INDIVIDUALS, AND RAP SESSIONS ARE DETAILED. REFERRAL SYSTEM OF PSYCHIATRIC, MEDICAL, AND LEGAL CONSULTANTS IS SUGGESTED. OTHER COUNSELING TECHNIQUES COVERED INCLUDE A HELP ROOM IN THE SCHOOL TO SERVICES AS THE CENTER FOR ALL COUNCIL ACTIVITIES, A HOTLINE, JOB CENTER, AND TUTORING PROGRAMS. FINALLY, GUIDELINES ON PRESENTING DRUG USE INFORMATION TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY FOCUS ON GUEST SPEAKERS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS. AN INDEX IS APPENDED. (MJM)
