Abstract
Information is provided regarding the modes of transmission of HIV in the workplace, the risk of transmission under various assumptions, the principles underlying risk control, and specific risk-control recommendations for employers and workers. The text assumes that the modes of transmission for hepatitis B virus are similar to those of HIV. The document also provides information on the medical management of persons who have sustained an exposure at the workplace to these viruses. These guidelines are intended for use by a technically informed audience. Tables, appended instructions regarding universal precautions and procedures for health-care settings, and 37 references
